Executive pay : McDonald's cut CEO Thompson's total pay 31% to $9.5 million

Don Thompson, president and CEO of McDonald's Corp., saw his total 2013 compensation package drop 31 percent, to $9.5 million, in a year when the fast-food giant saw lackluster sales.

Mr. Thomson, who ascended to the top spot in mid-2012, did receive a 20 percent salary increase in 2013, to $1.2 million. He also got $4.6 million in stock awards, about seven times the $660,129 granted in 2012.
But since McDonald's revenue grew 2 percent to $28.1 billion last year, that was only enough for Mr. Thompson to receive 70 percent of his annual incentive payout.

"Our 2013 financial performance was below our expectations and compensation targets for each of our primary metrics, which negatively impacted executive compensation," the company said in a document filed today with the Securities and Exchange Commission. "As a reflection of our pay for performance philosophy, officers did not receive 2014 base salary increases in connection with our annual review process."
McDonald's shares were at $99.29, down 14 cents, in late trading today.

The company is scheduled to report first-quarter results on April 22.
