Analyst: Revenue from app stores to top $36B in 2015

Total revenue from app stores like the Apple App Store and Android Marketplace will nearly double to $14.1 billion next year and will reach $36.7 billion by 2015, according to tech research firm Canalys.

App Stores are expected to bring in $7.3 billion in revenue in 2011, which includes direct app purchases, in-app purchases and subscriptions, Canalys said.

The overwhelming number of apps on the Apple App Store and Android Marketplace might prove too daunting for consumers. That could create an opportunity for phone carriers like AT&T and Verizon Wireless to set up customized app stores that suggest apps based on user data, the firm said. Carriers have better access to phone-use data, which gives them a clearer picture of phone owner’s habits.

Apple currently takes a 30 percent cut from all transactions for in-app purchases and in-app subscriptions. Apple also takes a 30 percent cut of the sales of paid applications. The Apple App Store has more than 425,000 apps.

The iPhone manufacturer says it has sold more than 200 million iOS devices, making iOS the number one mobile operating system. Apple sold more than 25 million iPads in its first 14 months on sale. iPhone and iPad owners have downloaded more than 14 billion apps from the App Store in less than three years. Apple has also paid out more than $2.5 billion to developers building apps for the App Store.

Apprentice contestant James Sun working on mobile deals with Microsoft


Former reality-show contestant James Sun is working on a mobile deals app with Microsoft.


The app, which will launch in July, will offer mobile deals at Seattle restaurants. Microsoft's Tag group is designing the graphic codes similar to bar codes designed to be scanned by a mobile phone at the restaurant.

The application is similar to deals website Groupon in that it offers deals for a limited time, but it lets restaurants manage it more closely so they aren't crushed by a stampede of people who all want to redeem their coupons at the same time.

People can download the app, search what deals are closest to them and select one. To redeem the coupon, they go to the restaurant and scan the code at the restaurant with the phone. It will be available for the iPhone and Android phones.

Sun is chief executive of a Kirkland company called Pirq which he started in the spring. He previously was a contestant on the sixth season of the television show "The Apprentice."

Restaurants that will offer the deals in July include Sip, 13 Coins, Desert Fire, Red Mango and Cupcake Royale.

Top 10 expected Android devices


The future of the Android operating platform looks promising. Here is a list of the top 10 forthcoming Android devices:

Motorola Droid Bionic: A successor to Droid Incredible, the device will have a 1GHz NVIDIA Tegra 2 AP20H dual-core processor and a LTE (Long Term Evaluation) connectivity. The new Bionic is particularly built for speed and will come with an 8 mega-pixel camera. The release date is not fixed, but is expected before the end of 2011.

Toshiba Thrive: The tablet’s specialty will be full-size USB port. It will also have a SD card slot and a HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) port and will also consist of a dual-core processor. The release date of the device is rumored to be around July.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 (LTE): Although the Wi-fi only Galaxy Tab is set for June 17th release, the LTE version will be debuting sometime this summer. The device is expected to give Apple iPad 2 a tough competition. Verizon’s fast LTE network will make web browsing easier and faster than before.

Motorola Photon 4G: This will be the company’s first WiMAX-capable phone. The phone will have a dual-core processor like Atrix on AT&T. The phone will run on an Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) platform. The device can also be connected to a TV to play games on a larger screen.

Asus Padfone: Asus has made it possible to connect your smartphone to the tablet. Once the phone is mounted beside the device, all the phone’s features can be accessed from the tablet.

Motorola Xoom 2: Rumors say that the tablet will have a Tegra 3 quad-core processor which will make it the most powerful and efficient tablet on the market. No solid news is available at the moment about the device but will be a worthy successor to the company’s 10.1-inch tablet.

Nexus 3: Nothing much is available about this mythical device as of now, but is expected sometime in the fourth quarter of 2011. The Nexus 3 will become one of the first phones to have the Ice Cream Sandwich version of the Android operating system. The OS is expected to link the gap between Android tablets and Android handsets. The phone is expected to bring radical changes to the Android OS platform.

HTC EVO 3D: As per the name suggests, the phone will have a 3D display and will capture 3D images. The phone is expected to have an interesting impact on the market. Exposure to long-term 3D exposure, however, can be a source of prolonged headaches.

Samsung Galaxy S II: Europe may get to this one early while the US will have to wait for the device and its carrier. The device will boast a Super AMOLED Plus Display and a capacitive touchscreen, and will be dual-core powered. This phone promises to be a joy to behold.

Motorola Droid 3: The earliest Motorola Droid was the first in the new generation of Android devices in 2009. An improved keyboard and a high-resolution qHD display (a display resolution of 960 pixels by 540 pixels arranged in a 16:9 aspect ratio. This display is one-quarter of a full HD 1080p frame and is three-quarters of a 720p frame) with a dual-core processor is expected.

Comscore reports Android tops and Blackberry drops in smartphone markets

Google Inc.’s Android OS (GOOG) showed national dominance in a new report released by Reston, Va.-based Comscore (SCOR) that shows Apple Inc.’s (AAPL) iPhone overtaking Research in Motion Ltd.’s (RIMM) previous BlackBerry dominance in smartphone markets.
The report highlighted trends in the U.S. mobile phone industry during the three-month average period ending April 2011. The study surveyed more than 30,000 U.S. mobile subscribers.
Google’s Android accounted for 36.4% of U.S. smartphone users in April, up 5.2% from January. Apple moved up to No. 2, with 26% smartphone market share, up 1.3% from January. Research in Motion fell 4.7% to 25.7% of the smartphone market.
Phones running Microsoft Corp.’s OS made up for 6.7% of the smartphone market. Comscore said the original company to pioneer the smartphone, Palm, continued a decline, dropping from 3.2% of the smartphone market in January to a low 2.6% in April.
The study also found Samsung to be the top handset manufacturer overall with 24.5% market share. LG landed second with a 20.9% share and Motorola with a 15.6% share. Apple had 8.3% OEM market share and RIM rounded out the list at 8.2%.
Comscore said 74.6 million U.S. consumers owned a smartphone as of April, up 13% from January and that 234 million Americans ages 13 and older used mobile devices.

10 Androids That Outmuscle the iPhone

NEW YORK (TheStreet) -- Apple's(AAPL) iPhone had a good run atop the smartphone league, but 10 Google(GOOG) Androids aim to bury the tuckered-out leader this year.
Motorola Mobility(MMI), Samsung, HTC and LG have promised to deliver supercharged, ultra-thin, 4G Android devices in the coming weeks and months.


The giant Android attack features bigger screens, better cameras, faster processors and speedier 4G connections than the upcoming iPhone.

The Android's phone screens, for example, start at 4 inches and go to 4.5 inches, advancing the size standard for this generation of touchscreens. By comparison, Apple's next iPhone is expected to have a 3.5-inch screen.

The new Androids are 4G phones either on AT&T's(T) HSDPA-Plus network or Verizon's(VZ) LTE network, and four of the 10 will come with dual core processors.

Apple, on the other hand, is expected to upgrade to a dual-core processor this year, but the 4G LTE iPhone has been delayed to 2012, as first reported here.

The presumed delay of the next iPhone from June to September, and the decision to wait a year on 4G LTE upgrade highlight just a few of the areas where Apple has been lagging behind the leaders in the Android pack.

"The processor and display quality improvement in the Android camp is proceeding at such a clip that Apple will be under a lot of pressure to deliver a substantial jump in iPhone specs next autumn," MKM Partners' analyst Tero Kuittinen.

"It's not clear how Apple can battle the rapid Android evolution," says Kuittinen, "unless it picks up the pace of its iPhone launches."

Here's a look at the top 10 Androids that could dwarf the iPhone.

Samsung Nexus S, Sprint

This is Google's second run at making its own phone, only this time Samsung is manufacturing the device and Sprint(S) is selling it. Two years ago, the Nexus One was made by HTC and sold online by Google. It was an experiment in retailing that was far less revolutionary than Google hoped.

The Nexus S runs on Google Android 2.3 Gingerbread operating system and works on Sprint's WiMax 4G service. Because it is a phone built to Google's specifications, it includes some of Google's favorite projects including NFC or near field communications that may one day allow phones to make purchases with a swipe at a sales counter.

The Nexus phones are big among Android fans who see them as more purely Android than other versions in the market. The Gingerbread system has been a little hard to find and the Nexus S will continue to be among the most advanced Androids until Ice Cream Sandwich arrives as early as year-end.

LG Optimus

The LG Optimus is one of the sleeker members of the new Android class. Even though it has a 4-inch screen, the phone is nearly a third of an inch thick, and at 3.8 ounces, it is a full ounce lighter than the iPhone.

The LG Optimus runs on Android 2.2 or Froyo and is powered by a 1-gigahertz OMAP processor from Texas Instruments(TXN), one of the key wins for TI in the most recent round of Androids.

The LG Optimus is expected to debut in Europe this month and arrive in the U.S. later this year. AT&T and possibly T-Mobile will likely get the phone since it is configured for the HSDPA network.

Samsung Droid Charge, Verizon

After a little delay, No. 2 phone maker Samsung finally gets into Verizon's Droid franchise and continues the robotic theme for another year.

The Droid Charge runs on Android 2.2, has a 4.3-inch LED screen and is powered by a 1-gigahertz Samsung Cortex A8 processor. According to analysts, Samsung has built the phone to consume about half as much battery power than its 4G LTE predecessor the HTC Thunderbolt.

Another area where it exceeds the Thunderbolt is on price. Verizon has a $300 price tag on the phone with a two-year contract.

Samsung Function, Verizon

Samsung is pushing hard to get on the 4G LTE bandwagon where Verizon has a speedy lead over the rest of the telco field. The Function is a member of the Samsung Galaxy family and a follow up to the 3G Fascinate, which debuted last year at Verizon.

The Function is a truly muscular phone. It runs on Android Gingerbread, it is powered by a dual-core 1.2-gigahertz processor, with 1-gigabyte of memory and another 32-gigabytes of built-in storage. And the 8-megapixel camera shoots 1080p HD video

The Function is due later this year, and depending on the timing, may be one of the more formidable opponents to the iPhone next iPhone.

Motorola Mobility Targa, Verizon

Speaking of formidable, Motorola Mobility apparently wasn't happy with how the Bionic was coming together and reworked the phone under the code name Targa. Bionic was expected to be the blockbuster 4G LTE phone for Verizon from Motorola, and aimed not just at the iPhone but at the Android superphones from Samsung and HTC.

There's not much information about what powers the Targa, but the specs are likely to be similar to the Bionic. That list would include a dual-core processor, and an 8-megapixel camera.

Verizon and Motorola were expected to have the Bionic available by the end of June, but a revamped Targa will likely be a pre-holiday fall arrival. This would also pit it squarely against the next iPhone.

HTC Sensation

When and if it arrives at T-Mobile, the HTC Sensation promises to be a big step up from the HTC Thunderbolt. And that's no small feat. The Sensation is expected to have one of the first dual-core 1.2-gigahertz Qualcomm(QCOM) Snapdragon processors, which holds big promise for Qualcomm.

The Sensation has a 4.3-inch display, a 8-megapixel camera and it runs on Android's Gingerbread operating system. The phone has an aluminum unibody structure, a trend Apple started with its laptops.

The Sensation runs on the HSDPA network that AT&T and T-Mobile call 4G. The phone is expected to arrive as early as next month.

LG Revolution, Verizon

LG's focus on feature phones made it a weak player in the smartphone game, but the Korean electronics giant now wants to make up for lost ground in the super-phone category.

The LG Revolution is the heaviest of the five Androids, weighing 6 ounces. But it carries the weight well in a sleek half-inch-thick form with a large 4.3-inch display screen.

The phone runs on Qualcomm Snapdragon 1-gigahertz processor and has a whopping 16 gigabytes of storage. It has two cameras, one front-facing for video chats and the rear a less-than-robust 5-megapixel shooter.

The Revolution is a 4G LTE phone that was expected to start selling at Verizon in the first quarter.

Samsung Infuse, AT&T

Samsung seems to be trying extra hard to be the iPhone replacement for AT&T(T). By appearances, the Samsung Infuse looks very much like a large version of the iPhone 4, at least from the front.

Samsung had reasonable success with Android phones in its Galaxy series; with the Infuse, it hopes to take that one more step higher. The phone has a massive 4.5-inch super-AMOLED-plus screen that is designed to provide better resolution and easier daylight viewing.

The Infuse runs on a speedy 1.2-gigahertz Hummingbird single-core processor. Its front-facing camera is a wimpy 1.3-megapixels, but the rear camera captures 8-megapixels. The Infuse runs on the HSDPA-Plus wireless technology, which AT&T started calling 4G.

The Infuse, sort of like the 5-inch Dell(DELL) Streak, attempts to push the limits of super-phone sizes in an effort to skirt the fringes of the larger tablet market.

AT&T starts selling the Infuse this spring.

HTC Thunderbolt, Verizon

We got our hands on the HTC Thunderbolt when it arrived in March. Its speed is astonishing, but its battery life is terrible.

The Thunderbolt has the best name of the new crop of 4G devices that Verizon has introduced so far. The Thunderbolt looks very much like HTC's popular EVO at Sprint, with the same convex back and kickstand.

The Thunderbolt runs on Qualcomm's 1-gigahertz Snapdragon processor, has a 4.3-inch screen and a front-facing camera as well as an 8-megapixel rear camera. All those specs, by the way, are identical to its 4G WiMax brother, the EVO at Sprint.

The difference with the Thunderbolt is that it runs on Verizon's 4G LTE network. The Thunderbolt arrived in March quarter and was hailed as the first Verizon 4G LTE phone.

Motorola Atrix, AT&T

If there was one phone that caught the most attention at CES, it was the Motorola Atrix, which AT&T had been promoting like crazy.

This Atrix uses a dual-core Nvidia processor like its sister phone the Bionic, and has similar specs. But it also features 1-gigabyte of RAM, the same deployed by small laptops. And curiously, that's how Motorola is pitching this device -- as a pocket computer.

During the Motorola demonstration, the Atrix was docked in an empty laptop shell, which, powered by a keyboard and big screen, made the Atrix the core of a notebook computer. The Atrix is designed to serve as both your super-phone and through a docking system, your PC.

With processing power and memory comparable to a netbook, the Atrix may help push Motorola devices further into the workplace, bumping up against Research In Motion(RIMM) and Hewlett-Packard's(HPQ) Palm business.

Google's Android dethrones Nokia's Symbian as world's top smart phone operating system

Google's Android has surpassed Nokia's Symbian as the top smart phone operating system worldwide.
The shift is a big one -- Symbian has been the leading smart phone operating system globally since the smart phone market launched about a decade ago, according to a report from Reuters.
Android's ascension is particularly notable because of how quick it has risen to the top of the smart phone software heap. Google's first Android operating system release was in October 2008.
According to the Reuters report, about 32.9 million handsets running Android were sold worldwide in the last three months of 2010, up nearly seven times more than the same period in 2009. Phones powered by Symbian accounted for 31 million handsets sold in the fourth quarter of last year, according to data from the research firm Canalys, the report said.
Sales of Apple's iPhone rose to 16.2 million units in the fourth quarter, up from 8.7 million a year earlier, according to Reuters.
A key difference between Google and its competitors such as Nokia, Apple and Research In Motion is the fact that Google doesn't make its handsets itself. As Reuters noted, Android has become the operating system of choice for HTC, LG Electronics, Motorola, Samsung and others.

Android smartphone sales outpace rivals

Nearly one-third of the smartphones sold in the U.S. between March and August were loaded with Google's Android operating system, while Apple and Research in Motion each accounted for about 25% of sales, Nielsen reports.

In the six months ending August 10, Android phones accounted for 32 percent of the smartphones sold, Nielsen said.

Android is a mobile operating system developed by Google and is based upon a modified version of the Linux kernel. It was initially developed by Android Inc. (a firm purchased by Google) and later positioned in the Open Handset Alliance. According to NPD Group, unit sales for Android OS smartphones ranked first among all smartphone OS handsets sold in the U.S. in the second quarter of 2010, at 33%. BlackBerry OS is second at 28%, and iOS is ranked third with 22%.

Android has a large community of developers writing application programs (apps) that extend the functionality of the devices. There are currently over 70,000 apps available for Android with some estimates saying 100,000 have been submitted, which makes it the second most popular mobile development environment. Developers write managed code in the Java language, controlling the device via Google-developed Java libraries.
