Ultrabooks to help NAND flash market reach $22.9 billion

The global market for NAND flash memory devices is forecast to hit $22.9 billion this year, an increase of 8% from last year's $21.2 billion, partly driven by demand for ultrabook computers with solid-state drives, according to IHS iSuppli.

Smartphones and tablets will also contribute to the healthy increase in sales. The market research firm sees the NAND flash market rising to $30.9 billion by 2016.

Smartphones are also expected to be a growth driver for NAND, as smartphone shipments are expected to reach 626 million units this year. NAND flash content in smartphone units is expected to double to 18.9 gigabytes by 2016, further expanding NAND demand.

On its own, Apple should consume about 25% of overall NAND supply this year. The iPad will be responsible for 74% of NAND consumption in the tablet segment this year, as some models use up to 64 gigabytes of storage, compared with 8 gigabytes from Amazon.com Inc.'s Kindle Fire. Apple's MacBook Air and iPod Touch also use NAND in significant quantities.
