Gammon Gold changes name to AuRico Gold

(Reuters) - Gammon Gold Inc is giving its logo a make-over and changing its name, as the gold miner continues "repositioning" itself, the company said on Monday.

The company will change its name to AuRico Gold, a combination of "Au", which is the atomic symbol for gold, and "Rico," which is the Spanish word for rich.

Gammon's ticker symbol will change to "AUQ" on both the Toronto Stock Exchange and the New York Stock Exchange.

The company said it has spent three years repositioning itself for success and that the new name would reflect a "new beginning and new chapter in the company's history."

Nova Scotia-based Gammon Gold owns three operating mines and various exploration projects in Mexico.

The company recently completed a $420 million takeover of Capital Gold, after battling smaller rival Timmins Gold Corp for several months.

Shareholders will vote on the name change at Gammon's annual meeting on June 9.
